Monthly Mingle- An Interview with Elva Ramirez, Journalist, Consultant & Author
For our March “Monthly Mingle”, Founder and Chief Mingle Officer, Laura Taylor interviewed Elva Ramirez, journalist, consultant, and author of “Zero Proof: 90 Non-Alcoholic Recipes for Mindful Drinking”. A seasoned multimedia reporter turned freelance journalist and media consultant, Elva spent a decade at the Wall Street Journal before embarking on global travels to uncover captivating stories in spirits, food, and hospitality. Elva’s work has graced the pages of renowned publications such as Rolling Stone, Elle, and Forbes. Additionally, Elva has contributed to the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University and "The Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails" edited by David Wondrich and Noah Rothbaum, published in January 2022.
Tell us about yourself in three sentences.
I’m a wine and spirits journalist, who also focuses on the emerging zero proof movement. My second book comes out this spring, and I’m about to graduate with an MBA, with a focus on analytics and strategy.
Have you heard of or participated in the sober curious movement?
I began tracking the interest in the movement in 2018 or so. I wrote an article about how bartenders were excited about the zero proof movement. That article led to my first book, “Zero Proof,” which has over 90 original recipes from top bartenders.
Since then, I’m frequently trying the best non-alc options, although I do occasionally still have a sip or two of Champagne. It’s about moderation for me.
Have you participated in Dry Jan? How was it?
I do it every so often, but I sometimes don’t because my birthday is in January. That said, I did it this year and it was great. In general, I aim to drink a lot less this year. Dry January is a state of mind, so to speak.
How do you make yourself feel ‘part of the party’ when you aren’t drinking?
The zero proof drinker just wants to feel included. So it starts with treating the zero proof drink with the same care given to a Martini or a gin and tonic. That means: gorgeous glassware, a fresh garnish, thoughtful ingredients. Zero proof drinkers were so often singled out because their drinks weren’t treated with the same attention.
Best advice for other women entrepreneurs wanting to start a business?
Use your network and tell everyone what you are doing. It’s likely that at some point, what you are doing is exactly what someone else needs help with.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Publishing two gorgeous books that get to feature my very talented bartender friends.
How have other women helped support you through your career journey?
Women have hired me to help with freelance projects. They saw me being goofy on my social media, and said, “I love your writing. Come work on projects with us.” My female friends are extremely supportive of my career and always look for ways that we can help each other.
